Caligula Comes To Life At VMFA
by Peter J. Schertz, Ph.D., Curator of Ancient Art, VMFA
For nearly a year, a team of international scholars has been doing new research focused on VMFA’s star example of ancient sculpture – the statue of Emperor Gaius, a.k.a. "Caligula." The results will be presented at the symposium "Caligula 3-D: Man, Myth, Emperor" at VMFA on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Leslie Cheek Theater at the VMFA in Richmond. Admission is free, but tickets are required (Visit www.VMFA.museum/symposia/caligula for info and updates).
Using advanced scanning technologies, we have been able to produce highly detailed (accurate to 0.25 mm!) 3-D digital renderings of the statue that have enabled us to virtually reconstruct the missing parts of the statue, correct previous restorations, and hypothesize (on the basis of new examinations) the statue’s original polychromy.
Participants in the symposium will discuss issues that pertain directly to the proposed reconstructions of the statue; issues in the artistic representation of the Caligula; Caligula as a historical person; and the ancient and modern history and presentation of the statue. Many of the topics are not without controversy, and the discussion promises to be both lively and stimulating.
