Denver schools, college team up to train teachers for linguistically diverse classrooms

In its first two years, an innovative "teacher residency" program has placed 55 teachers with special training in hard-to-staff Denver classrooms.
All the teachers are trained to teach children for whom English isn't their first language.
"We need to make sure we are bringing people on board who are prepared to teach our students," said Thalia Nawi, program director.
A partnership between Denver Public Schools and the University of Denver resulted in the Denver Teacher Residency, aimed at bringing a diverse group of teachers into the classroom — while ensuring they are prepared for the diverse students of DPS.
The residency program provides teacher licensure, a master's degree and a full year of apprentice teaching with a mentor.
