Call for Papers: Language, Literature, and Culture in Collegiate Foreign Language Education

Not Your Grandma's German(ic Language) Class: Language, Literature, and Culture in Collegiate Foreign Language Education

The Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin announces its 4th biennial Graduate Student Conference on Friday, March 2, 2012. We invite graduate students from all sub-disciplines in Germanic language departments to submit papers on ongoing research activities or pedagogical practices.

We encourage proposals from a variety of fields that contribute to understandings of language use, language teaching and/or language learning, including foreign languages, education, communications, sociolinguistics, psychology, speech and hearing sciences, anthropology and sociology. Joint papers and cross-disciplinary proposals are welcome.

Possible topics include:
- The role of conversation analysis, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and dialectology in FL learning
- Innovative practices and course design in FLE
- Didactization of literary texts for FL learners
- Development of inter/transcultural competence
- Changing professional roles and demands upon graduate students
- Second Language Acquisition research
- Impact of ACTFL proficiency guidelines and standards and 2007 MLA report on profession
- Using linguistics/literature/cultural studies in the FL classroom
- Teaching/learning reading, writing, listening and speaking in FLE
- Incorporating technology into the FL classroom
- Assessment in FLE

Proposals for 20 minute presentations should be submitted as an e-mail attachment (PDF or Word DOC) to GerGradConference2012 at gmail dot com no later than November 1, 2011.

Submissions should include:
- the title of the paper
- names and affiliations of all authors
- mailing address and phone number of the primary author
- e-mail addresses of all authors
- an abstract no more than 250 words in length
- any multi-media equipment needs
