Sweetwater mulls Chinese student program

The Sweetwater Union High School District is pursuing a plan to bring hundreds of Chinese students to study at a middle school and high school campus in an ambitious program that could be launched as early as next school year.
Superintendent Ed Brand recently met with an education official from China’s Guangdong Province who had expressed interest in bringing students to the United States to live and study.
Brand said the district would like to create a “school within a school” at Southwest Middle School and Sweetwater High School and would pursue between $9,000 to $10,000 per student in fees with the intent of having the project pay for itself.
He sees educational benefits and future opportunities coming from such a program, including having his students become familiar with China and establishing relationships that could lead to future job opportunities.
