Eureka City Schools board approves Yurok language class
June 29, 2012
The Eureka City Schools Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved adding a Yurok I class at Eureka High School in the fall.
To pay for the new class, Eureka City Schools has entered into a partnership with the Yurok Tribe. The tribe has agreed to donate $5,000. The district will also apply for a grant of $5,000 from the Humboldt Area Foundation and will allocate $5,000 from its Title VII Indian Education Grant to pay for the class.
The district will operate the course as a pilot project for one year. If it is successful, the district will incorporate the program into its regular course offerings. The Yurok language course has already been approved as meeting world language requirements for the University of California and California State University systems.
Eureka High School currently offers Spanish and German as foreign language courses.
