Museum Resources for Global Learning

From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2012/08/visualize_the_world_museum_resources_for_global_learning.html

Museums house collections of art and artifacts of cultural and historical importance. Visitors to museums learn about traditions, but more importantly, are challenged to think critically about creativity and perspectives. Museums help people learn about humans through time and place, and the human condition in general.

There are a number of museums that cater to global learners. Here are links to some of them and the educational resources they offer: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2012/08/visualize_the_world_museum_resources_for_global_learning.html

Summer 2012 Issue of the ESL GLOBE

The Summer 2012 issue of the ESL GLOBE has just been published.
You can find it at: http://www.ncsu.edu/eslglobe

The focus of this issue is how instructional models must change to meet the needs of 21st century learners. The learning and thinking styles of today's digital native students differ sharply from those of their 20th century predecessors, and many forward-thinking educators consider it a moral imperative to develop and implement strategies for interactive, collaborative learning driven by new technologies.

This issue takes a look at MOOCS, flipped classrooms, crowdsourcing, and the highly successful initiative of the Khan Academy.

As usual, there are tips for the ESL classroom, discussions of current issues, and lists of resources and books.

Teaching With the Olympics: Ideas for English Language Learners
By LARRY FERLAZZO

The Olympics offer countless opportunities for learning. With most countries in the world participating, the Games are especially interesting for E.L.L.s since it’s likely that every student will have a representative from his or her native country participating.

Here is a selection of Times pieces, along with ideas for teaching with them. But remember: new photographs, articles, videos and infographics will be published daily throughout the Games. http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/27/ideas-for-english-language-learners-the-summer-olympics

Mr. Ferlazzo’s article is the first in a new regular feature on the Learning Network: “Ideas for E.L.L.s,” a monthly selection of New York Times articles, infographics, videos and photographs that are especially accessible for English language learners around the globe — and that could, of course, be useful for any learner for whom Times content can be difficult.
