In a recent article teacher Chris Livaccari describes how he let his students turn the tables on him - they were the linguists who subsequently taught the teacher what they had found. Specifically, they looked at Chinese and Japanese characters, identified common patterns, and hypothesized meanings for them. Livaccari believes that their newly-acquired pattern-recognition skills will be useful in learning any language with a new script.
