Registration Open for National German Exam

The National German Exam is administered each year to nearly 22,000 high school students in the second, third and fourth level of German. The Exam, now in its 54th year, provides individual diagnostic feedback, rewards students through an extensive prize program, and creates a sense of accomplishment. Exam results provide a means of comparing students in all regions of the country, as well as programmatic data. Exam results are among the criteria used in selecting the recipients of chapter awards and the national AATG/PAD Study Trip Awards, a four-week study trip program in Germany.

The 2014 Exam period will be December 2, 2013 to February 1, 2014.

Theaterfest: German Theatre Festival and Competition

The 37th Annual German Theatre Festival and Competition which will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2014.

The Theaterfest is held in Chapin Auditorium on the campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Dramatic presentations in German of no more than 15 minutes in length will be judged by a jury of secondary school German teachers, members of Mount Holyoke's German studies and theatre arts faculty as well as representatives of the German Consulate and the Goethe Institute in Boston. Prizes will be awarded on the elementary, secondary and college/university levels.

The deadline for entry is March 21, 2014.

Free Film Screenings of Verdi Operas in Their Original Settings

Two films which celebrate Verdi will be shown for free at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco.

22 October: La Traviata a Paris (2000; 115 minutes) is a filming of Verdi's opera La Traviata shown in the original Parisian scenes and times of day described in the libretto. Given the distance between the numerous locations, the film required a high level of technological sophistication and received a 2001 Emmy award as well as a Prix Italia.

29 October: likewise, Rigoletto a Mantova (2010, 129 minutes) shows Verdi's Rigoletto in the settings in Mantova and hours of the day identified by the libretto. With Placido Domingo and conducted by Zubin Mehta.
